INTERFOR CUT IN CLAYOQUOT SOUND BIOSPHERE RESERVE

From November 2000 to May 2001, International Forest Products (Interfor) was logging on Catface Mountain, Clayoquot Sound. This truckload of newly cut trees was photographed at the beginning of March, 2001 coming down from Caftace. Interfor cut 53,000 cubic metres of wood from Catface. That’s about 1,850 logging truck loads like the one you see to the left.

Tell him that you don’t want anymore cutting of ancient forests in the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve.

OVERCUT

Too much too fast – this characterizes the rate of logging in British Columbia. Overcutting is one of the underlying problems driving habitat destruction and regional wood shortages. Our overcut campaign advocates for reducing the cut to ecologically sustainable levels and implementing economic transition strategies for overcut dependent communities.

MARKETS INITIATIVE

The Markets Initiative works with Canadian companies to help them develop environmentally sound wood and paper purchasing policies. Markets Initiative is a coalition project of four BC environmental non-profit organizations: Forest Action Network, Friends of Clayoquot Sound, Greenpeace Canada and the Sierra club of BC.

FISH FARMING

Open netcage salmon farming is a time bomb in the ocean. The farmed fish amplify diseases which can spread to the wild (and already have in New Brunswick). The use of pesticides, antibiotics and dyes to colour the fish flesh introduces toxics into nature and into the unsuspecting consumer. Over 5000 sea mammals attracted to the caged salmon “dinner” have been killed by fish farmers. FOCS is campaigning to move the salmon farming industry into land-based closed loop systems where they do not threaten the wild ocean environment.

PROTECT CLAYOQUOT SOUND

Utilizing public education, media, and public protest FOCS works to protect the ecological integrity of the earth’s most endangered forest type, the ancient temperate rainforests. FOCS is strongly opposed to logging of ancient rainforests and has had many successes in stopping and transforming industrial forestry.
